On January 31 the Byhalia Elementary second, third, and fourth-grade students participated in Project Fit America’s “Shuttle Cup Run Challenge”. For two weeks, the students performed the Challenge in their P.E. classes against others in their homeroom. The top three girl and the top three boy performers from each homeroom were identified. These students earned their place in the class Challenge tournament against the top 3 girls, or top 3 boys from the other homerooms in their grade The competition was gender and grade-level based. Each grade had 12 girls participating and 12 boys participating in the Class Championship tournament. The Shuttle Cup Run Challenge provides a test of each student’s speed, quickness, coordination, endurance, quick-thinking skills, and social skills. In the Challenge, each runner is assigned a lane to perform in and stands behind the start/finish line. 30 feet away are 3 plastic cups arranged in a 2-1 pyramid formation. On “Go”, the runners race down their lane and grab one cup then race back to place the cup on the floor just behind their starting line. Then they repeat these steps and get a second cup and place it beside their first cup. They finish by getting their third cup, which they must carefully place on top of the first two cups in a pyramid formation. To be successfully finished, a contestant’s cups must be standing in the pyramid formation and be behind their start/finish line. Also, the contestant must stand closely behind their stacked cups and hold both hands above their head. The race finishes were videoed and viewed to help the judges better identify the contestant’s order of finish. Places 1-3 girls and boys from grades 2, 3, and 4 were awarded ribbons. All the students in each grade attended the Challenge Championship tournament in the BES gym and cheered on their participating classmates or their favorite participants in the competition. Several elimination heats were run to determine the three students in each final race. It was a fun and exciting event that was enjoyed by all the students and staff. The Shuttle Cup Run Challenge tournament was organized by Coach C.B. McClatchy, BES Physical Education Teacher, with the assistance of many of the BES faculty, staff, and administration. McClatchy commented, “Thank you to our administration for allowing us to conduct this event again this year. Our students greatly anticipate and enjoy the Shuttle Cup Run Challenge tournament every year.”
